Headache after sex: what should you know?

Sexual activity can raise heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension. Some people develop a gradual ache as excitement builds; others experience pain close to orgasm. These patterns can be primary headaches, but the symptom alone cannot confirm that explanation. A first episode, a rapid peak, or pain with neurological changes needs prompt evaluation.

Stop sexual activity, rest, and note when the pain started, how quickly it peaked, and whether it was accompanied by nausea, neck pain, weakness, or visual change. Do not drive yourself if the headache is severe or you feel unwell. Arrange medical advice for a first or recurring episode before resuming strenuous activity.

Seek emergency care for a sudden worst-ever headache, fainting, confusion, seizure, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, vision loss, severe vomiting, chest pain, or a stiff neck with fever. Urgent assessment is also appropriate when pain follows head injury or does not settle.

Ask whether your pattern resembles a primary sex-related headache, whether examination or brain and blood-vessel imaging is needed, and when activity is safe again. Tell the clinician about medicines, blood-pressure history, migraine, recreational drugs, and any symptoms before or after orgasm.
