Headache after drinking: what to know

Alcohol can increase fluid loss, disturb sleep and irritate the stomach; the next-day headache may be joined by thirst, nausea, light sensitivity or fatigue. Some people react to particular drink ingredients, while migraine can be triggered by alcohol, missed meals or poor sleep. Drinking contaminated or unknown substances creates additional danger. A headache after drinking does not by itself identify the cause, and repeated episodes deserve a health review.

Stop drinking alcohol, rest in a safe place and sip water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and able to swallow. Eat a simple meal if tolerated and avoid driving or operating equipment while impaired. Do not try to counter alcohol with more alcohol. Check with a pharmacist before taking pain medicine, particularly if you have vomiting, liver disease, stomach problems or take regular medicines. Avoid strenuous activity until alert and hydrated.

Call emergency services for difficulty waking, slow or irregular breathing, seizures, confusion, collapse, blue or cold skin, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain or a sudden severe headache. Seek urgent assessment after a fall or head injury, or when vision, speech, balance or strength changes. Arrange medical advice for recurrent headaches, symptoms after a small amount, or signs of dehydration such as persistent dizziness and very little urine.

Ask whether migraine, medicine interactions, liver or stomach problems, sleep disruption or a sensitivity could explain the pattern. Tell the clinician what you drank, when symptoms began, how much you vomited and which medicines you took.
