Headache above the right eyebrow: what to know

A headache above the right eyebrow may reflect migraine, congestion, eye strain, dehydration, or heat-related illness. The brow position is a clue, not a diagnosis. Describe the quality of pain and note nausea, light sensitivity, blocked nose, fever, eye redness, vision changes or recent time outdoors.

Migraine can cause pain on one side with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Allergic Rhinitis, a Common Cold or Chronic Sinusitis may cause pressure around the brow when nasal passages are inflamed or blocked. Screen use, reading or a vision issue can strain muscles around the eyes. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion become more relevant after sweating or prolonged heat. COVID-19 may include headache alongside respiratory or general symptoms.

Move away from bright light and screens, rest, and drink fluids slowly. A cool cloth over the brow can be soothing. Saline nasal care may help when congestion is present. Consider a labelled over-the-counter pain medicine only if it is appropriate for you; a pharmacist can check interactions and precautions. Avoid repeatedly taking pain medicine without medical advice, and record when the pain starts and what accompanies it.

Seek urgent help if the headache is abrupt and severe, follows a head injury, or comes with weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting or vision loss. A red, swollen or intensely painful eye needs prompt assessment. Following heat exposure, confusion, collapse or inability to drink requires urgent care. Make a routine appointment for recurring, worsening or persistent headaches.
