Headache above the right eye: what to know

Pain above the right eye can have several causes, including sinus pressure, migraine, eye strain, dehydration, or heat exposure. The location alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the pain is throbbing or pressing, whether light or movement worsens it, and whether you also have a blocked nose, fever, nausea, vision change, or facial tenderness.

One-sided pain around the brow may occur with migraine, which can bring nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Nasal congestion, facial pressure and reduced smell can accompany Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis or a Common Cold. Eye strain may follow prolonged screen use or an uncorrected vision problem. COVID-19 can include headache with respiratory or general symptoms. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion are also relevant after sweating, limited fluids or hot surroundings.

Rest in a quiet, dim room and take a break from screens. Drink fluids gradually, eat if you have missed a meal, and use a cool cloth on the forehead. If congestion is present, gentle saline nasal care may help. Use an over-the-counter pain medicine only when it is suitable for you and follow its label; check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another illness, or take regular medicines. Keep a note of timing, triggers and associated symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden, severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, or a new vision problem. Pain with a red or very painful eye needs prompt assessment. After heat exposure, confusion, collapse, inability to drink, or worsening symptoms can signal a serious heat illness. Arrange a medical review when headaches recur, steadily worsen, follow an injury, or do not settle with simple measures.
