Headache above the left eye: what to know

One-sided pain may occur with migraine, which can include pulsing discomfort, nausea, light sensitivity or a visual aura. Focusing, squinting, poor sleep or tension in the brow, jaw and neck can also affect one side more than the other. Sneezing and a blocked or runny nose may occur with Allergic Rhinitis or a Common Cold; ongoing congestion and facial pressure may accompany Chronic Sinusitis. COVID-19, Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion may include headache with broader symptoms. A left-sided location does not prove a particular diagnosis.

Pause close-up work, lower glare and rest in a quiet room. Drink fluids and eat a small meal if you have not eaten. A cool cloth may ease discomfort; avoid pressing hard on the eye. Notice whether light, movement, coughing, chewing, screens or congestion changes the pain. Keep a record of duration, recurrence, nausea, visual symptoms and medicines used. Check with a pharmacist before taking pain relief if you are pregnant, have chronic illness or use regular medicines.

Call emergency services for sudden severe pain, loss of vision, double vision, weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, seizure or fainting. Urgent assessment is also needed for a red, very painful eye, halos around lights, repeated vomiting, fever with a stiff neck, or pain after a head or eye injury. Seek a routine clinical review if episodes recur, last longer than usual, or interfere with work, sleep or daily activities.
