Headache above the eyes: what to know

A pressure across the brow can follow screen use, focusing effort, poor sleep or tight forehead and neck muscles. Nasal blockage, sneezing or facial pressure may occur with Allergic Rhinitis, while thick mucus and longer-lasting congestion may accompany Chronic Sinusitis. A Common Cold can create temporary facial pressure. Migraine may cause pulsing pain with nausea or light sensitivity, even without nasal symptoms. COVID-19, Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can also present with headache. The position above the eyes does not by itself identify the cause.

Rest your eyes with regular distance breaks, soften bright lighting and drink fluids. Avoid rubbing the eyes and remove contact lenses if they feel uncomfortable. A cool cloth over the forehead may be soothing. Record timing, screen exposure, congestion, nausea, light sensitivity and any change in vision. Use medicines only as directed and ask a pharmacist if you have eye disease, pregnancy, allergies or other regular treatment.

Seek emergency help for sudden vision loss, double vision, a curtain-like shadow, severe eye pain with a red eye, a sudden explosive headache, confusion, weakness, seizure or a stiff neck with fever. Obtain prompt medical assessment for repeated vomiting, marked swelling around an eye, pain after injury or a headache that is steadily worsening. Book a review for recurrent headaches or persistent eye strain so vision and other causes can be checked.
