Headache above the ear: what to know

Pain above the ear may be tender when touched if the scalp or muscles are irritated. Neck posture, prolonged phone use, jaw clenching and chewing can refer discomfort toward the temple and ear. Migraine may bring throbbing pain, nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Ear fullness, discharge, hearing change or pain with swallowing suggests an ear-related problem. Nasal blockage and facial pressure can accompany Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis or a Common Cold. COVID-19, Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can also include headache. Rest somewhere quiet, drink fluids and take a break from screens. Keep your jaw relaxed, avoid gum and choose soft foods if chewing increases the pain. Gentle neck movement may help when stiffness is present; stop if it worsens symptoms. Note whether the pain is one-sided, pulsating, tender, triggered by chewing or accompanied by hearing or balance changes. Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness, facial drooping, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever or sudden hearing loss.
