What should you know about head skin psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition. On the scalp, it may form sharply defined patches covered by silvery or white scale. It can extend beyond the hairline to the forehead, behind the ears, or the back of the neck. Some people notice itching, tenderness, flaking, or skin that cracks after scratching.

The condition can resemble dandruff, eczema, or another rash, so appearance alone does not confirm it. Picking scale may cause bleeding and can worsen irritation. Hair may temporarily shed when inflamed skin is repeatedly scratched, but this is different from scarring hair loss.

Arrange an examination if scale keeps returning or extends beyond the scalp. Use prescribed scalp treatments exactly as directed, allowing them to reach the skin rather than only coating the hair. Wash gently, soften scale only with advice from your clinician, and avoid forceful scraping, tight hairstyles, and harsh chemical treatments during a flare.

Notice whether flares follow illness, stress, skin injury, or a change in treatment, and share that pattern at review. Treatment may need adjustment when plaques remain thick, itchy, or difficult to reach.

Seek medical advice for painful cracking, pus, marked swelling, bleeding that does not stop, or sudden patchy hair loss. Get prompt help if redness spreads quickly or you feel feverish. Joint swelling, prolonged morning stiffness, or heel pain also deserves discussion because psoriasis can affect more than skin.
