Head Laceration Stitches: What to Know

A clinician checks the cut's depth, location, contamination, and nearby nerves or blood vessels. Local anaesthetic such as lidocaine can numb the area while the wound is cleaned and closed. Some sutures remain until a clinician removes them; others dissolve. A head injury can also occur with a cut, so the assessment may include questions about loss of consciousness, vomiting, memory, or unusual drowsiness.

Follow the dressing instructions and keep the area protected from rubbing or picking. Wash your hands before touching it, and use only the cleaning products recommended for the wound. Do not pull at a thread or cut it yourself. Keep follow-up appointments so healing and suture removal can be checked. Ask about tetanus vaccination if the wound was dirty, deep, or caused by an object whose contamination is uncertain.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing sleepiness, confusion, repeated vomiting, a seizure, weakness, or loss of consciousness. Contact the treating service promptly if redness spreads, pain or swelling increases, pus appears, the wound opens, or fever develops. A worsening headache after the injury also needs prompt assessment.
