Head cold headache: causes, relief, and warning signs

Nasal swelling and mucus can create pressure around the face and forehead. Coughing, poor sleep, reduced fluid intake, and muscle tension can add to head pain. A common cold presents with headache in some people, but headache has many other causes. Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, weakness, a stiff neck, trouble speaking, vision loss, breathing difficulty, or repeated vomiting. Obtain medical advice when the headache keeps returning, steadily worsens, follows a head injury, or does not improve as the cold settles. A clinician should also assess headache with a persistent high temperature, unusual rash, or significant dehydration.
