What should you know about HDCV rabies vaccine?

HDCV stands for human diploid cell vaccine, a modern rabies vaccine made using prepared human cell cultures. It trains immune defences to respond to rabies virus. A vaccine course may be recommended before contact when someone has an ongoing occupational or travel risk. After a bite, scratch, or saliva contact from a potentially infected animal, vaccination is part of post-exposure prevention and needs prompt clinical assessment.

The need for vaccine, the number and timing of doses, and whether rabies immunoglobulin is needed depend on the exposure, the animal, local guidance, and any previous rabies vaccination. A previous course can change the plan, so tell the clinician exactly what you received and when.

Wash a bite or scratch straight away with plenty of soap and running water, then seek urgent medical care. Do not wait for symptoms, and do not rely on the animal appearing well. Take details about the animal, the incident, and your vaccination history if they are available. A clinician will assess whether you need HDCV, rabies immunoglobulin, wound care, or observation of the animal.

For planned travel or work with animals, arrange a risk review in advance. Pre-exposure vaccination does not remove the need for medical assessment after contact; it changes the post-exposure schedule.

Seek urgent care immediately after any bite, scratch, or saliva exposure involving broken skin, the eyes, the mouth, or another mucous membrane when rabies cannot be confidently excluded. Go promptly even if the wound is small or painless. Rabies symptoms can appear later, and vaccination is preventive rather than a treatment to start after illness develops.
