A detected result means hepatitis C virus RNA was found in the sample, which supports an active infection and needs clinical assessment. An undetected result means RNA was not found at the time of testing. This may mean there is no current infection, although timing and the reason for testing affect interpretation. An antibody test and an RNA test answer different questions: antibodies show immune exposure, while RNA indicates virus present in the blood now.

Arrange a clinician review of the result rather than interpreting it alone. They may discuss liver health, other blood tests, medicines, alcohol, and whether treatment assessment is appropriate. Until you have advice, do not share razors, toothbrushes, or needles, and cover cuts carefully. Hepatitis C is blood-borne; ordinary contact such as hugging does not spread it.

Seek urgent medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes with confusion, vomiting blood, severe abdominal swelling, or marked drowsiness.
