What should you know about an Hb blood test?

An Hb blood test measures haemoglobin, the iron-containing protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. It is often included in a full blood count and requires a small blood sample from a vein. The result is interpreted with your symptoms, medical history, and other blood-count measurements.

A lower haemoglobin result may fit with anaemia, which can develop when the body has too little iron, loses blood, makes fewer red blood cells, or breaks them down more quickly. A result can also be influenced by hydration, pregnancy, long-term illness, or recent bleeding. A higher result may occur when the blood is more concentrated or when the body has adapted to lower oxygen availability. One result does not identify its cause by itself. Depending on the pattern, a clinician may consider iron studies, kidney assessment, or further tests. Anaemia can cause fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, or pale skin.

Ask for the actual result, the laboratory reference range, and how it compares with earlier tests. Do not start iron or other supplements solely from an Hb result, because treatment depends on the cause and excess iron can be harmful. Tell the clinician about heavy periods, digestive symptoms, dietary restrictions, recent illness, bleeding, or medicines that may affect blood loss. Eat and drink as advised before any follow-up testing, and keep a record of symptoms and changes in energy.

Arrange prompt medical advice for worsening breathlessness, chest discomfort, fainting, a racing heartbeat at rest, marked weakness, or visible bleeding. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion, or black or bloody stools. Mild tiredness still deserves assessment when it persists, especially if it affects daily activities.
