Hazy urine in urinalysis

Urine may look cloudy after dehydration, changes in salts or crystals, mucus, skin cells or contamination during collection. A urine test can check for white blood cells, red blood cells, protein, glucose, bacteria and other markers. Haze alone cannot confirm a urinary tract infection.

Burning when passing urine, needing to pass urine often, lower abdominal discomfort or a strong smell may support a bladder infection. Fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting or feeling very unwell raises concern for kidney infection. In men, difficulty starting or completing urination can also relate to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Follow the instructions for a clean-catch sample and provide it promptly if another urine test is requested. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has restricted your intake, and note any medicines, supplements, vaginal discharge or menstrual bleeding that could affect the sample.

Ask a clinician to interpret the result rather than treating the appearance yourself. Antibiotic treatment is appropriate only when the clinical picture and testing support a bacterial infection; unnecessary antibiotics can cause side effects and resistance.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever with back or side pain, shaking chills, vomiting, confusion, visible blood in urine, inability to pass urine or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange a review for repeated haziness, persistent urinary discomfort, new leakage or changes in urine that do not settle. Pregnancy, childhood, older age or a weakened immune system can lower the threshold for assessment.
