What should you know about having cloudy urine?

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated, when minerals or crystals are present, or when mucus, blood or inflammatory cells mix with it. Dehydration often makes urine darker and stronger-smelling. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy urine alongside burning, frequent urination, urgency or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection is more concerning when urinary changes occur with fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back. Cloudiness alone does not identify the cause.

Drink water regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and notice whether the appearance returns to normal. Do not start leftover antibiotics or use someone else’s medicine. Record when the change began, how often it occurs, any new smell, and whether you have pain, discharge or changes in urination. Arrange a medical review if it persists, keeps returning, or comes with urinary discomfort; a urine test can help identify infection or other changes.

Seek urgent medical help for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, vomiting, severe side or back pain, confusion, or feeling markedly unwell. Contact a clinician promptly if you see blood, are pregnant, have known kidney problems, or cannot keep fluids down. A child, older adult or person with a weakened immune system may need earlier assessment because infection can worsen without obvious symptoms.
