What an itchy throat can mean

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with an itchy throat alongside sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, or itchy eyes. A common cold may irritate the throat as congestion and drainage develop. Food allergy can cause mouth or throat itching soon after eating a trigger food; swelling, wheezing or difficulty swallowing makes this an emergency. Dust-mite allergy may cause recurring symptoms indoors or on waking. Smoke, strong fragrances, dry air and mouth breathing can also irritate throat tissues without an infection.

Sip water or a warm drink, use a humidifier if the air is dry, and avoid smoke, vaping and strong scents. Notice whether symptoms follow a particular food, room, season or exposure. When to seek care

Call emergency services immediately for throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, blue lips, or difficulty swallowing saliva, especially after eating or taking a medicine. Arrange medical review if the irritation keeps returning, is severe, comes with a persistent cough or fever, or does not settle after a short period of self-care. Seek advice sooner for a child, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system.
