Havanese eye discharge: what to know

Small amounts of clear or brownish staining can occur when tears collect around the eyes, especially in a long-haired breed. Watery discharge may follow dust, shampoo, or allergy. Thick yellow or green material, redness, swelling, or eyelids stuck together can occur with conjunctivitis or another infection. Squinting and rubbing suggest discomfort; a cloudy eye, a visible scratch, or a bulging eye is more concerning. One-sided discharge can point to a local irritant or blocked drainage, while discharge from both eyes may fit allergy or an infectious problem.

Gently wipe the fur around the eye with clean cotton or gauze dampened with lukewarm water, using a fresh piece for each eye. Keep hair trimmed away from the surface only if a groomer or vet can do this safely. Prevent rubbing with supervision and wash your hands after cleaning. Do not use human eye drops, leftover antibiotics, or homemade solutions. Book a veterinary appointment if discharge continues, returns often, or comes with redness; the vet may check the cornea, tear flow, eyelids, and eyelash position.

Seek same-day care for marked squinting, severe redness, swelling, pain, a cloudy or injured eye, sudden vision change, or repeated pawing. Emergency care is appropriate if the eye is protruding or the dog seems suddenly unable to see. Keep the dog from rubbing while arranging help.

Ask whether the discharge is from allergy, conjunctivitis, tear drainage, or a corneal problem, and which cleaning method and treatment are safe for your dog.
