The tracer is taken up by tissues using glucose. The scanner records this activity, while CT shows anatomy and location. A PET-CT can help doctors assess a known cancer, look for disease in more than one area, or investigate cancer when the original site is unclear. Increased tracer activity is not specific to cancer because inflammation can also alter uptake.

Ask whether fasting is needed, when to arrive, and whether diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney problems, or medicines affect preparation. Wear comfortable clothing and tell staff about recent infections or treatments. Plan to rest quietly after the tracer is given and follow the centre's instructions about drinking fluids and contact with others.

Contact the imaging team before attending if you cannot fast as instructed, have diabetes that may make fasting difficult, may be pregnant, or have had a reaction to a previous tracer or contrast agent. After the scan, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, which areas will be imaged, whether CT or contrast is part of the plan, and when the report will be sent. Ask the facility which services are included in the quote and whether preparation or follow-up imaging is separate.
