Hard Spots on the Skin: What to Know

A firm raised spot may be a pimple, especially when a blocked pore becomes inflamed. Folliculitis affects hair follicles and may cause clusters of tender bumps. Shaving can lead to razor bumps when hairs curve back into the skin. Around the mouth, perioral dermatitis may cause small irritated bumps, while rosacea can produce inflammatory facial spots alongside flushing or sensitivity. Hormonal acne commonly presents with deeper, tender lesions around the lower face, although appearance alone cannot identify a cause.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Avoid picking, scrubbing, and heavy products that sting or clog pores. Pause close shaving over an irritated area and use a clean razor when shaving resumes. Keep a simple note of triggers, location, and whether spots appear after sweating, hair removal, or a new product. A clinician can distinguish acne from folliculitis or dermatitis and tailor treatment; LED light therapy may be discussed for some acne care plans.

Seek medical advice when spots are painful, spreading, repeatedly returning, leaving scars, or not settling with gentle care. Arrange faster assessment for marked swelling, pus with worsening redness, fever, eye involvement, or sudden widespread symptoms. Facial spots that persist around the mouth or come with eye pain should also be reviewed.
