Hard red bumps on skin: what they may mean

A single tender bump may be an inflamed follicle or boil, while several itchy bumps after heat or sweating can fit heat rash. A new product, adhesive, or plant exposure may trigger contact dermatitis. Redness with burning across the cheeks can occur with rosacea; thick, scaly areas may fit psoriasis. Sun-exposed skin may become firm, sore, and red after sunburn. Cellulitis is a deeper skin infection that can cause spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so note where the bumps began, whether they are itchy or painful, and whether they are spreading.

Do not squeeze, scratch, or pierce the bumps. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pause any recently added fragranced product, and use a cool compress for itch or heat. Wear loose clothing and keep sweaty skin dry. Photograph the area in good light so changes are easier to track. A clinician can examine the texture, distribution, and temperature of the skin and decide whether a swab, prescription treatment, or another assessment is needed. Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness is spreading, the area is hot or rapidly more painful, pus is present, or you feel feverish or unwell. Seek urgent help for facial or eye swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A bump that persists, repeatedly returns, bleeds, or changes in appearance also deserves an examination, even if it is not painful.
