What should you know about a hard lump in your leg?

A lump in the leg can arise in the skin, fatty tissue, muscle, a joint, or bone. A bruise, cyst, lipoma, inflamed area, muscle injury, or infection may produce a palpable mass. A firm mass that is deep, fixed, steadily enlarging, or associated with persistent pain needs careful assessment because a soft-tissue or bone tumour is also possible. Lymphoma can affect lymph nodes in the groin, while cancer of unknown primary describes cancer found after its starting site is not initially identified. The location and texture provide clues, not a diagnosis.

Measure the area only if you can do so gently, and record when it appeared, whether it followed an injury or injection, and whether the skin is red or warm. Note pain, weakness, numbness, reduced movement, fever, or changes in walking. Arrange a medical appointment for a persistent, growing, deep, or fixed lump. Examination may lead to ultrasound, an X-ray, or other imaging; if tissue sampling is needed, the clinician will plan it after reviewing the imaging. Do not cut, drain, or vigorously massage the lump.

Seek urgent help for sudden leg swelling with chest pain or breathlessness, severe pain after an injury, a cold or pale foot, or new weakness. Arrange prompt review if the lump grows quickly, becomes very painful, is associated with fever and spreading redness, or interferes with movement. A persistent lump should not be ignored simply because the skin looks normal.

Ask which tissue the lump may involve and whether imaging is needed before any procedure. Ask whether an injury, medicine, or infection could explain it, how to monitor its size, and which symptoms require earlier review. If sampling is discussed, ask what information it can provide and when results will guide treatment.
