What should you know about hard lump behind neck?

The back of the neck contains lymph nodes, skin, fatty tissue, muscle, and bone. A lump may follow a scalp or skin infection, irritation, an inflamed cyst, or another benign change. A hard lump behind the neck can be a presentation of lymphoma or head and neck cancer, and thyroid or unknown-primary cancers may also enter a clinician's assessment depending on the location and examination.

Important clues include whether the lump moves under the skin, whether it is tender, how long it has been present, and whether it is changing. Fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, persistent cough, voice change, or swallowing difficulty add useful context but do not establish a diagnosis.

Book a clinical appointment and describe the exact position, size, onset, and any recent illness, scalp problem, dental issue, or injury. Avoid squeezing the lump. The clinician may examine nearby skin and lymph-node areas and may arrange imaging or a sample if the findings warrant it.

Take note of changes between appointments, including growth, new lumps, skin changes, or pain. If a thyroid-related cause is suspected, a specialist may discuss thyroid removal surgery only after the diagnosis and treatment plan are clear.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, severe neck pain with fever, confusion, or weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for a fixed lump that continues to enlarge or for persistent symptoms such as drenching night sweats or unexplained weight loss.
