What should you know about hard immovable lump on neck?

A neck lump can come from an enlarged lymph node, the thyroid, a salivary gland, skin, muscle, or another tissue. Infection can enlarge nodes, while a firm or fixed mass may need more detailed assessment. A hard neck lump can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but the lump's feel alone cannot identify its cause.

The clinician will consider how long it has been present, whether it is growing, whether it is tender, and whether there are symptoms such as hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, ear pain, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

Arrange an appointment and note when you first noticed the lump, any recent infection, dental problems, smoking or tobacco exposure, and changes in voice or swallowing. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it. Examination may be followed by imaging, blood tests, or a needle or tissue sample, depending on the findings.

Keep a simple record of its size and symptoms without delaying assessment. A referral may involve an ear, nose and throat specialist, endocrinologist, haematologist, or oncology team.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, rapidly worsening swallowing problems, drooling, severe swelling, coughing blood, or sudden weakness. Contact a clinician promptly if the lump is enlarging, remains fixed, or is accompanied by persistent hoarseness, fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

Ask where the lump appears to arise, which scan or sample is appropriate, how soon results should be available, and which changes should prompt urgent contact while you wait.
