What should you know about hangover headache?

Alcohol can increase urination and fragment sleep. Vomiting, sweating, a hot environment, and not eating may add dehydration or low energy. The pain may feel throbbing, tight, or worse with movement, light, or sound. A headache after drinking is not proof that alcohol is the only cause: congestion, infection, heat exhaustion, or anxiety can produce overlapping symptoms. Dehydration is one possible contributor, especially when thirst, dry mouth, or dark urine are also present.

Rest in a quiet, dim room, sip fluids, and eat a light meal if tolerated. A cool cloth may feel soothing. Follow the label for any pain medicine and ask a pharmacist if you have liver disease, stomach ulcers, kidney problems, take blood thinners, or have recently been drinking heavily. Avoid taking extra doses because the pain is slow to settle, and avoid more alcohol. Keep track of triggers, associated symptoms, and whether the pain improves with hydration and sleep.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, seizure, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or a headache after a head injury. Arrange prompt assessment if pain is severe, keeps worsening, feels unlike your usual headaches, or occurs with a persistent fever, rash, or breathing difficulty. Do not drive yourself if you feel confused or faint.

Ask whether the pattern fits a hangover or another condition, which pain relief is safe for you, and whether your headaches could be linked to sleep, anxiety, sinus symptoms, or alcohol withdrawal. Mention your fluid intake, vomiting, medicines, and any neurological symptoms.
