What should you know about hands and feet cold and shivering?

Shivering is rapid muscle activity that generates heat. It may start in a cold environment, but chills can also occur as the body’s temperature is changing during an infection. Influenza, pneumonia, malaria, dengue fever, and urinary or kidney infections are possible examples; sepsis is a medical emergency that can develop from infection. The symptom pattern matters: fever, cough, painful urination, flank pain, rash, vomiting, or severe weakness should not be ignored.

Move to a warm, dry place, use light layers, and sip fluids if you are awake and able to drink. Check your temperature and write down when the chills began, recent travel, insect exposure, and any new symptoms. Rest, but do not delay assessment if you feel rapidly worse. Avoid cold baths and avoid taking medicines that are unsuitable for you; ask a pharmacist or clinician about symptom relief.

Get emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue or mottled skin, extreme drowsiness, a very fast heartbeat, or difficulty staying awake. Seek prompt medical review for persistent chills, a high or rising fever, severe headache, stiff neck, rash, repeated vomiting, new cough with breathing difficulty, or pain in the back or side. Recent travel to a malaria area or a possible mosquito-borne illness also warrants prompt advice.
