What should you know about handheld LED light therapy?

Short answer
Handheld LED light therapy uses selected light wavelengths at the skin surface and may support treatment of some acne-related inflammation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What LED light does
LED devices do not use ultraviolet light. Blue light may act on acne-associated bacteria near the surface, while red or near-infrared light is used for its effects on inflammation and tissue signalling. A handheld device covers a smaller area than a panel, so contact, distance, wavelength, and session instructions affect exposure. Results are usually gradual and vary with the underlying skin problem.
Using a device thoughtfully
Read the device instructions and use the recommended eye protection when supplied. Start with clean, dry skin unless your clinician advises otherwise, and avoid adding irritating products immediately before treatment. Tell a clinician if you take light-sensitive medicines or have an eye condition. Do not use a light device over an unexplained rash, open wound, or suspected infection without advice.
When to get medical advice
Stop and seek advice if treatment causes persistent burning, blistering, worsening redness, eye pain, or changes in vision. Arrange an assessment for painful deep spots, widespread acne, scarring, or a rash that is spreading, because light therapy may not address the cause and delaying effective treatment can allow skin damage to continue.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which wavelength fits your diagnosis, whether the device is appropriate with your medicines, how often to use it, and what improvement or irritation should change the plan.

Questions people ask
Can LED therapy replace acne treatment?
It may be an adjunct for some people, but it does not replace an acne plan when medicines or other care are needed.
Is handheld LED therapy the same as a panel?
Both use LEDs, but a handheld device generally treats a smaller area and may deliver a different exposure pattern.
