Hand ECG machine: what to know

A handheld device usually uses contact with your fingers or palms to capture a short tracing. It may help identify an irregular rhythm during the recording, particularly when palpitations come and go. It does not show every heart problem, measure all causes of chest discomfort, or replace an examination and clinical history.

The result can be affected by movement, poor contact, sweat or an incomplete recording. A label such as normal, unclear or possible rhythm problem is a prompt for interpretation, not a diagnosis on its own. Sit quietly, follow the device instructions and keep both hands still during the recording. Record the time and symptoms alongside the tracing, then share the file with a clinician through an approved route. Do not repeatedly test yourself to postpone care. Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, or palpitations with collapse or marked weakness. Seek urgent medical advice for a persistent fast or irregular heartbeat, especially with dizziness. Do this even if the handheld tracing says normal, because the device may miss an intermittent or non-rhythm cause.
