What should you know about hamster ringworm?

On a person, ringworm may begin as an itchy, scaly or irritated patch that slowly expands, sometimes with a clearer centre and a more active edge. A hamster may have areas of hair loss, flaky skin, crusting or scratching, although an animal can carry infection without an obvious pattern. The fungus spreads through direct handling and contaminated bedding, cages, brushes or fabrics. It is not caused by a worm. A clinician can distinguish ringworm from other causes of a rash, including eczema.

Arrange veterinary advice for the hamster and medical advice for anyone who develops a new rash after contact. Until then, wash hands after handling the animal, avoid sharing towels, and clean the cage and washable items as directed. Wear gloves for cage cleaning and keep the hamster away from other pets if a veterinarian recommends separation. Do not apply human creams to the hamster unless prescribed for animals. Seek prompt medical care if the rash is spreading quickly, painful, warm, draining, or close to the eyes. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe reaction.
