Short answer

Hamster ringworm is a contagious fungal skin infection that may pass from an infected hamster to a person through contact.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
A dermatophyte fungus
Possible source
An infected hamster or contaminated items
Spread
Contact with skin, fur, bedding or equipment

What it can look like

On a person, ringworm may begin as an itchy, scaly or irritated patch that slowly expands, sometimes with a clearer centre and a more active edge. A hamster may have areas of hair loss, flaky skin, crusting or scratching, although an animal can carry infection without an obvious pattern. The fungus spreads through direct handling and contaminated bedding, cages, brushes or fabrics. It is not caused by a worm. A clinician can distinguish ringworm from other causes of a rash, including eczema.

What to do now

Arrange veterinary advice for the hamster and medical advice for anyone who develops a new rash after contact. Until then, wash hands after handling the animal, avoid sharing towels, and clean the cage and washable items as directed. Wear gloves for cage cleaning and keep the hamster away from other pets if a veterinarian recommends separation. Do not apply human creams to the hamster unless prescribed for animals. Treatment for people may involve topical antifungal treatment; more widespread or difficult infection may need oral antifungal treatment prescribed after assessment. See [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/) for general information, and [Skin Rash](/symptoms/skin-rash/) or [Scaly Skin](/symptoms/skin-scaling/) if those features are prominent.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care if the rash is spreading quickly, painful, warm, draining, or close to the eyes. Arrange an assessment if a child, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity has been exposed, or if the rash does not improve with prescribed treatment. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe reaction.

Questions for your doctor

Could this patch be ringworm or another rash? Does anyone else in the household need assessment? Should the hamster or other pets be examined? Which treatment is suitable for the affected body area, and how should bedding and shared surfaces be handled?

Questions people ask

Can a healthy-looking hamster spread ringworm?

Yes. An animal may carry or shed fungus without a clearly visible skin problem, so veterinary assessment matters when a household rash follows contact.

Can I treat hamster ringworm at home?

Do not self-treat the hamster. Use veterinary guidance for the animal and medical advice for people with symptoms.
