What should you know about hamster bite rabies?

Small rodents are not common sources of human rabies, but risk assessment depends on the animal’s health, behaviour, origin, and contact with wildlife. A bite can still break the skin and introduce bacteria, especially on a finger, hand, or near a joint. Tetanus protection may also need review. Do not judge the wound only by its size: punctures can be deeper than they look, and pain, redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge can develop later.

Rinse and wash the bite thoroughly with running water and soap, then cover it with a clean dressing. Avoid sealing a deep puncture yourself or applying irritating substances. Note when the bite happened and whether the hamster is available for safe observation by the responsible authorities or veterinary professionals. Contact a healthcare service promptly if the skin was broken, the animal came from an unknown setting, or you cannot confirm its health history. A clinician can decide whether rabies post-exposure prophylaxis or rabies vaccination is relevant.

Get urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, loss of movement or feeling, rapidly increasing swelling, red streaks, fever, or a bite close to the eye or a joint. Seek immediate emergency care for breathing difficulty, faintness, or facial swelling. Do not wait for symptoms if a clinician advises rabies assessment, because prevention is time-sensitive and rabies symptoms are not a safe way to decide whether exposure mattered.
