Half-beam block radiotherapy

The treatment team adjusts the accelerator jaws so radiation is delivered from one half of the field, with the blocked edge aligned to the machine’s central axis. This can let two fields meet at a planned boundary, or help keep radiation away from a nearby structure. The technique is selected during computer planning and checked through measurements and imaging. It may be useful for some breast, head-and-neck, brain, pelvic or skin treatment arrangements, but the choice depends on anatomy and the intended dose distribution.

A planning appointment may include a scan, body-position supports and marks or a temporary reference on the skin. At each treatment visit, careful positioning matters because the field edge is part of the plan. Tell the radiographers if pain, stiffness or anxiety makes the planned position hard to hold. Contact your treatment team about worsening redness, blistering, moist skin, increasing pain, swelling, difficulty swallowing, severe nausea or any symptom that prevents you from eating, drinking or attending treatment. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, sudden neurological changes, heavy bleeding or collapse. The right response depends on the body area and the rest of your treatment plan.
