Hair Thinning With Psoriasis: What to Know

Scalp psoriasis can produce a rash with redness and thick scale that extends beyond the hairline. Itching may lead to scratching, which can loosen hairs or break them; the condition itself does not automatically mean permanent follicle damage. Hair thinning can also have a separate cause, so a dermatologist will consider the pattern, recent illness, medicines, and family history. Look for associated Dry Skin, Itchy Skin, Cracked Skin, Peeling Skin, or Scaly Skin when describing your symptoms.

Follow the prescribed psoriasis plan and soften scale only as directed; picking or forcefully scraping can worsen irritation. Wash gently, keep nails short, and avoid tight styles, harsh chemicals, and high heat while the scalp is sore. Tell your clinician if a product burns, worsens redness, or is difficult to apply through dense hair. Treating the underlying Psoriasis is usually the starting point before considering a separate hair-restoration plan.

Arrange review if hair loss is sudden, forms smooth patches, or continues after scalp inflammation improves. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, severe pain, pus, bleeding, fever, or extensive crusting. A new or changing Skin Rash, Skin Redness, or Skin Scaling may require a different diagnosis or treatment rather than more vigorous scale removal.
