Hair Snapping From Bleach: What to Know

Bleaching removes some of the hair's protective structure so the strand becomes porous, dry, and less able to withstand brushing, heat, or tension. Short pieces around the crown or ends suggest breakage rather than shedding from the root. A chemical burn can also irritate the scalp; pain, blistering, or oozing is different from ordinary dry hair and deserves prompt attention.

Stop bleaching, relaxing, and repeated permanent colour until the fragile lengths have grown out. Use a gentle shampoo, conditioner on every wash, and a wide-tooth comb starting at the ends. Blot rather than rub with a towel, limit hot tools, and avoid tight styles. A trim can remove split, unstable ends, but products cannot fuse a broken strand back together. Keep the scalp clean and avoid applying irritating home mixtures.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if breakage continues after chemical processing stops, if the scalp is sore or inflamed, or if you see smooth patches, scaling, or hairs broken close to the scalp. Scalp Ringworm can cause scaling and broken hairs, while Traction Alopecia is linked with repeated pulling; these need different treatment from bleach damage.

Ask whether the pattern is shaft breakage or hair loss from the follicle, whether your scalp barrier is injured, and when colouring could be reconsidered. Bring the bleach and hair-care products you use and describe any burning during the service.
