Hair Snapping After Bleach: What to Do

Lightening changes the hair’s protective outer layer and can leave the inner shaft more fragile. Snapping may show as short pieces, rough texture, split ends, or a sudden change in length. A burning scalp, crusting, or painful redness is different from ordinary shaft damage. Patchy breakage with scale or itching can also point to scalp ringworm, while persistent tension at the hairline may contribute to traction alopecia.

Stop further bleaching and other chemical processing until the hair is assessed or feels stronger. Use a gentle cleanser, conditioner, and wide-tooth comb; blot rather than rub with a towel. Let hair dry with little or no heat, avoid tight ponytails and extensions, and do not repeatedly test fragile strands by pulling them. A haircut can remove split ends, but products cannot restore a snapped section of shaft.

Seek medical advice if bleach caused intense burning, blisters, open skin, swelling, or persistent scalp pain. Arrange a dermatology review for patchy loss, broken hairs with scale, or worsening shedding after the scalp reaction settles. Urgent care is appropriate for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product exposure.

Ask whether the scalp was chemically irritated and whether the pattern is shaft breakage or follicle loss. Bring the product details and timing, and mention other dyes, relaxers, heat tools, tight styles, itch, scale, or new medicines. Ask when future colouring might be considered and how to reduce risk.
