Hair Psoriasis: What to Know

Short answer
Hair psoriasis usually refers to psoriasis affecting the scalp, where scale and inflammation can make hair care uncomfortable without directly changing the hair follicle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How scalp psoriasis may look
Psoriasis presents with inflamed areas and scale that may extend beyond the hairline. A person with scalp psoriasis may notice itch, dryness, redness, peeling, or thick adherent scale. Scratching and picking can break the skin and loosen hairs temporarily through physical trauma. Hair care products may sting when the skin barrier is cracked.
Dandruff, eczema, contact irritation, and infection can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Symptoms can vary across the scalp and may change over time. See [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/) for information about the wider condition.
Care for the scalp and hair
Follow the treatment schedule provided by your clinician and allow prescribed products to contact the scalp as directed. Wash gently with lukewarm water, massage with finger pads, and avoid lifting plaques with nails or comb teeth. Condition the hair lengths to reduce tangling, then pat dry. During active inflammation, limit bleaching, straightening, tight styles, and high heat.
Choose products that do not leave the scalp burning or increasingly itchy. If the scalp is [Dry Skin](/symptoms/dry-skin/) or [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/), moisturising and scale care may be part of the plan, but thick plaques may need medical treatment rather than extra shampoo.
When to seek care
Arrange review when plaques persist, cross the hairline, bleed after scratching, or disturb sleep. Seek prompt advice for pus, spreading warmth, marked swelling, fever, severe pain, or sudden patchy hair loss. These signs can indicate infection or another diagnosis requiring examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how to separate shampoo days from medicated treatment days, how to soften scale safely, and which styling services to postpone. Ask whether your symptoms fit psoriasis or another scalp condition and what change should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Does scalp psoriasis cause permanent hair loss?
Scratching and inflammation can contribute to temporary loss or breakage, so persistent changes deserve clinical assessment.
Can ordinary shampoo treat hair psoriasis?
A gentle shampoo may reduce irritation, but active scalp psoriasis often needs a treatment plan.
