What should you know about hair cupping therapy?

Short answer

Hair cupping therapy uses suction cups on or near the scalp, and it should be treated as a complementary practice rather than a proven cure for hair loss.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What hair cupping therapy involves

A practitioner places cups against the skin to create a pulling sensation. Dry cupping leaves the skin intact; wet cupping involves small skin pricks and carries additional bleeding and infection concerns. Scalp skin is sensitive, and hair, skin conditions, or recent procedures can make cup placement difficult. Temporary circular marks, tenderness, bruising, dizziness, or irritation can occur. Suction does not repair a damaged hair follicle or identify the cause of shedding, so persistent hair loss still needs a proper scalp and medical assessment.

How to approach a session

Before treatment, describe your scalp symptoms, medicines, bleeding tendency, allergies, and any recent surgery or hair procedure. Choose a practitioner who explains the technique, uses clean equipment, and obtains consent before starting. Avoid placing cups over broken skin, an active rash, infected areas, or a painful lump. Do not scratch or apply harsh products to marked skin afterward. If the goal is hair loss, ask about causes such as pattern changes, inflammation, nutritional problems, or medication effects; cupping should not delay a dermatology review.

When to seek medical care

Contact a clinician promptly if the scalp becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, or painful, or if you notice pus, fever, spreading irritation, or bleeding that does not settle. Seek urgent help for fainting, trouble breathing, facial swelling, or a severe allergic reaction. Arrange an assessment for sudden patchy loss, scalp sores, marked scaling, or hair shedding that continues, because these findings may need treatment beyond a complementary session.

Questions to ask

Ask: What may be causing my hair or scalp problem? Is cupping appropriate with my skin condition or medicines? Would dry cupping be safer than wet cupping for me? What signs should make me stop treatment? Which evidence-based options can protect the scalp and support regrowth?

Questions people ask

Can cupping regrow hair?

There is no reliable basis to treat scalp cupping as a replacement for diagnosing the cause of hair loss or choosing targeted treatment.

Is wet cupping the same as dry cupping?

No. Dry cupping uses suction on unbroken skin, while wet cupping includes small skin openings and adds bleeding and infection risks.
