Types of hair breakage: what to know

Split ends divide at the tip and may travel upward if the strand remains damaged. Mid-shaft breaks create many short hairs of uneven length. Frayed, rough strands often reflect loss of the protective outer cuticle after heat or chemical processing. Breakage concentrated at the temples, hairline, or crown may relate to tension or rubbing. A round patch with broken hairs plus scale or itch points toward a scalp issue rather than simple styling damage. These patterns can overlap, and looking at the scalp helps distinguish them.

For split or frayed ends, reduce heat and chemical exposure and arrange a trim. For widespread short breaks, improve conditioning and detangle slowly in sections. For edge or temple breakage, stop tight braids, ponytails, extensions, or attachments until the area is comfortable. Avoid picking at scale and do not share combs, brushes, hats, or bedding when a contagious scalp problem is suspected. Gentle handling protects new growth, but no product can restore a strand that has already snapped.

Book an assessment if breakage is rapidly increasing, leaves a distinct patch, or comes with pain, redness, pustules, crusts, or significant itching. Broken hairs with scale may occur with scalp ringworm. Hairline thinning after repeated tension may occur with traction alopecia.
