Hair Breakage Near the Root

Short stubble-like pieces may be snapped hair, new regrowth, or hairs affected by a follicle or scalp condition. Tight braids, extensions, ponytails, headwear, and repeated brushing can stress the root area. Chemical products applied close to the scalp can irritate skin and weaken nearby strands. Itch, scale, tenderness, crusting, or round patches are not typical styling clues alone; scalp ringworm can produce scaling and broken hairs.

Loosen styles that cause pulling or soreness and avoid extensions until the scalp feels settled. Wash gently with fingertips, rinse product thoroughly, and do not scratch or pick flakes. Keep chemical products off irritated skin and follow their use directions. Use a soft, flexible tie and vary where hair is secured. Photograph the area in consistent light so changes in density, redness, or patch shape are easier to describe at an appointment.

Arrange medical care for painful or tender thinning, shiny patches, pus, crusts, marked scaling, or a rapidly enlarging area. Repeated pulling can cause traction alopecia, which deserves attention before continued tension causes more follicle stress. Sudden root-level breakage after a chemical exposure also merits review, particularly if burning or swelling persists.
