What should you know about hair breakage from the root?

A snapped strand has an uneven or frayed end and may be found at different short lengths. New growth usually has a tapered end and stays attached to the scalp. A shed hair has a full length and may have a small bulb at one end. Tight styling, scratching, chemical treatments, and friction can break strands close to the scalp. Scalp ringworm may cause fragile broken hairs with scale, while traction alopecia is associated with ongoing pulling and thinning along stressed areas.

Photograph the area in consistent light and note whether the scalp is visible, sore, itchy, or scaly. Stop tight hairstyles and harsh chemical services for now. Wash gently, condition the lengths, and avoid picking or forceful brushing. Keep a simple record of new short hairs and any widening area so a clinician can compare change over time. Avoid pulling out short strands to inspect them.

Arrange a dermatology review for expanding thinning, smooth bare patches, scalp pain, redness, scale, crusts, or significant itch. Seek prompt care when broken hairs occur with a tender or swollen scalp, or when several household members have itchy scalp symptoms. These findings may need examination and targeted treatment rather than cosmetic repair alone.
