Hair Breakage Close Up: What to Look For

A split end may divide into branches, while a fractured strand can look thin, pale, kinked, or frayed. Many short hairs of different lengths suggest repeated snapping. A shed strand usually has its full length and may have a small club-shaped end; breakage leaves a shorter piece behind. Look at the scalp too: scale, redness, tenderness, crusting, or a clearly outlined patch changes the concern. Scalp ringworm can damage hairs near the scalp, while traction alopecia may follow repeated pulling in a predictable area.

Take a clear photo in good light and note recent styling, products, illness, or changes in texture. Avoid testing the strand by pulling it. Condition the lengths, detangle slowly, reduce heat and chemical processing, and avoid tight bands. A trim may tidy split ends, but only new growth can replace damaged length. If the scalp looks abnormal or the pattern is worsening, arrange an examination rather than relying on photographs alone.
