Haemophilus influenzae conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin surface covering the eye and inner eyelid. Haemophilus influenzae is one bacterium that can cause it, especially in children, although viruses and other bacteria can produce similar symptoms.

Typical features include a red or gritty eye, sticky discharge, eyelids that cling together, and watering. A swab is not needed in every case. The clinician considers the appearance, duration, age, contact history, and whether one or both eyes are involved.

Arrange a GP consultation when discharge is persistent, symptoms are worsening, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Wash hands before and after touching the eye, gently clean discharge with fresh cotton or clean water, and avoid sharing towels, pillows, or eye cosmetics.

Do not use someone else’s eye drops or wear contact lenses until the eye has recovered and a clinician says it is appropriate. If antibiotic treatment is prescribed, follow the instructions and complete the advised course. Antibiotics do not help viral conjunctivitis.

Seek urgent assessment for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, marked swelling, injury, or difficulty opening the eye. Babies with a red or discharging eye should be assessed promptly. Emergency care is appropriate when vision changes suddenly or pain is severe.

Ask whether the appearance fits bacterial conjunctivitis, whether a swab is useful, and how to use any prescribed drops. Ask when you may return to contact lenses, school, nursery, or work, and what change should prompt a review.
