What should you know about hacking cough?

A hacking cough may be dry or bring up mucus, and coughing can leave the throat and chest sore. A blocked or runny nose may allow mucus to irritate the throat, while a recent Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can leave the airways sensitive. Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma, Acid Reflux, and medicines such as some blood-pressure treatments can also cause or maintain cough. A cough that continues for a long time is considered Chronic Cough and may need a fuller assessment. In young children, breathing symptoms need particular attention.

Drink fluids regularly, avoid smoking and vaping, and reduce exposure to dust, perfumes, and other known irritants. Warm drinks may soothe the throat. Rest if you feel unwell, and follow any prescribed inhaler plan. Do not use leftover antibiotics or combine cough products without checking the ingredients with a pharmacist. Arrange a review if the cough is not settling, keeps disturbing sleep, or returns repeatedly; note its timing, triggers, mucus, and associated symptoms.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, choking, or coughing blood. Seek prompt review for a high fever, wheezing that is worsening, dehydration, repeated vomiting, or a child who is breathing fast or using extra muscles to breathe. A cough after an infection can linger, but deterioration or new warning signs require reassessment.
