Haakaa and a blocked milk duct

A blocked milk duct may feel like a localised tender or firm area in the breast during lactation. The surrounding tissue can become swollen, making milk flow feel slower. This is different from assuming that every lump has the same cause. If the area becomes hot and red or you develop feverishness and body aches, inflammation may be progressing and needs medical attention.

Keep feeding in a comfortable, usual pattern and avoid trying to drain the breast completely. If you place a Haakaa on the breast, use minimal suction and remove it if discomfort increases. Check that clothing, straps or sleeping pressure are not pressing on the breast. A cool pack, rest and pain relief recommended for you may help. Avoid forceful massage, vigorous vibration and repeated pumping to chase a lump.

Arrange medical advice if pain or the firm area is worsening, if redness spreads, or if you feel feverish, shivery or unusually unwell. Seek urgent help for severe weakness, fainting, confusion or breathing trouble. A clinician or lactation specialist can check positioning, feeding mechanics and whether another breast problem needs assessment.
