Growing Red Moles on the Skin

Cherry angiomas are small collections of blood vessels that can appear as bright red, purple, or darker raised spots. They may be smooth or slightly elevated and can bleed after rubbing or shaving. Several conditions can resemble a red mole, so colour alone cannot identify it. A clinician considers its shape, surface, growth pattern, symptoms, and surrounding skin before deciding whether further assessment is needed.

Take a clear photograph beside a ruler and note when the change began, whether it catches on clothing, and whether it bleeds without rubbing. Avoid picking or trying to remove the spot at home. If treatment is wanted for repeated bleeding or appearance, options may include pulsed dye laser treatment or electrosurgery after diagnosis. Protect the area from friction while it is being assessed.

Book a prompt skin examination if a red spot grows quickly, develops an irregular surface, repeatedly bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or changes colour. Seek urgent care for bleeding that will not stop with steady pressure, or for spreading redness, warmth, pus, or fever around the lesion.
