What to know about a growing cherry angioma

Cherry angiomas are small collections of blood vessels in the skin and may appear as bright red, purple, or dark red spots. They can be flat or raised and may catch on clothing or jewellery. A clinician may use close inspection or a dermatoscope to decide whether the appearance fits a cherry angioma or another lesion.

Do not pick, cut, or tie off the spot at home, because it can bleed and leave a mark. If removal is wanted or repeated bleeding is troublesome, a clinician may discuss Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment or Electrosurgery. The choice depends on the lesion’s size, depth, location, skin type, and whether tissue needs to be examined.

Arrange prompt assessment for rapid enlargement, repeated bleeding, persistent crusting, pain, ulceration, or a change in colour or outline. Bleeding after minor friction that does not settle also deserves review. A photograph with a familiar object beside the spot can help document change without delaying care.

Ask whether the spot has the expected features, whether removal is medically needed or cosmetic, what mark or colour change may follow, and how wound care will work. Ask whether a removed lesion will be sent for laboratory examination.
