Group B strep urine test: what does it mean?

Group B strep can be present in the urinary tract without causing noticeable symptoms. Burning when passing urine, frequent or urgent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy urine can support a diagnosis of urinary infection, but these symptoms have other causes too.

In pregnancy, group B strep in urine is clinically relevant because it can affect planning for care during labour. A urine result is not the same as a vaginal or rectal swab, so ask what was tested and how the result changes your care.

Speak with the clinician who requested the sample. They may consider your symptoms, the laboratory report, pregnancy status, and previous infections before deciding whether you need antibiotic treatment. If prescribed, take the medicine as directed and report a rash, breathing difficulty, or severe diarrhoea.

Drink normally, do not hold urine for long periods, and avoid using someone else’s antibiotics. If symptoms continue after treatment, arrange a review because persistent urinary symptoms can require another assessment or a different explanation.

Get urgent help for fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, confusion, marked weakness, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These can occur with a kidney infection or a more serious illness. If pregnant, contact your maternity service promptly if you develop contractions, leaking fluid, or reduced fetal movement.

Ask: Does this result indicate infection or carriage? Do I need a repeat urine test? Which symptoms should I monitor? Does pregnancy change the plan? Could another problem be causing my urinary symptoms?
