Groin warts: what to know

Warts are growths caused by certain types of human papillomavirus. In the groin or genital region they may appear as flesh-coloured, pink, or darker bumps, sometimes with a rough or clustered surface. They can be symptom-free, itchy, irritated, or prone to bleeding after rubbing. A clinician may need to distinguish them from skin tags, molluscum, dermatitis, or other lesions.

Do not assume every groin bump is a wart, and do not use ordinary over-the-counter wart acid on genital skin. Avoid picking or shaving across lesions, wash hands after touching the area, and discuss sexual contact and partner notification with a healthcare professional.

Book a dermatology or sexual-health assessment rather than trying to burn, cut, or tie off the growth. Keep the area clean and dry, wear comfortable underwear, and avoid sex if lesions are sore or bleeding. Barrier protection can reduce but does not eliminate skin-to-skin transmission because uncovered skin may still make contact.

Treatment may include prescription Imiquimod Treatment, freezing with Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal), Electrosurgery, or another form of Wart Removal. The choice depends on lesion number, size, exact site, pregnancy status, immune health, and personal preference. Warts can recur after treatment, so follow-up may be useful.

Arrange prompt assessment for a rapidly changing, ulcerated, persistently bleeding, very painful, or unusually firm lesion. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or severe pain. A new groin growth during pregnancy, or one in someone with reduced immunity, deserves clinician guidance before treatment. Do not delay evaluation simply because the bump is small or painless.
