Groin strain swelling: what to know

Short answer
Groin strain swelling can reflect irritated or torn inner-thigh muscle fibres, so reduce aggravating activity and arrange assessment if it is severe or does not settle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common area
- Upper inner thigh near the adductor muscles
- Helpful first step
- Relative rest from painful loading
- Assessment trigger
- Severe, spreading, or persistent swelling
What the swelling can mean
A groin strain commonly involves the adductor muscles, which draw the leg towards the body. Swelling may appear near the upper inner thigh after a sudden change of direction, sprint, kick, slip, or forceful stretch. Bruising, tenderness, weakness, and pain when squeezing the legs together can occur too. Swelling that spreads, feels hot, or comes with a lump may have another cause, so the whole groin should be assessed rather than assuming every symptom is muscular.
What to do now
Stop the movement that triggered pain and use relative rest: keep gentle daily movement within comfort, but avoid sprinting, kicking, heavy lifting, and deep stretching at first. A wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort for short periods; protect the skin and do not press firmly on a swollen area. As symptoms calm, a clinician can guide gradual strengthening through Exercise Therapy. A Sports Physiotherapy assessment can check strength, hip movement, and competing causes before loading is increased.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, inability to bear weight, marked bruising after a significant injury, fever, skin redness, or a painful groin bulge. Sudden scrotal pain or swelling also needs urgent assessment. Arrange a non-urgent examination when swelling persists, walking remains difficult, or symptoms repeatedly return with activity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure seems injured, whether imaging is needed, which movements are safe now, and how pain and swelling should change before strengthening or sport resumes.
