Where does groin strain pain occur?

Short answer

Groin strain pain is usually felt along the inner thigh or near the front of the hip, and it can worsen when the legs move apart or the thigh pulls inward.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Kicking, sprinting, cutting, or pulling the thigh inward

What the location can mean

A strain often affects the adductor muscles, which run from the pelvis down the inner thigh. You may notice tenderness close to the pubic area, a pulling sensation in the inner thigh, or discomfort that travels a short distance down the leg. Turning quickly, kicking, sprinting, climbing stairs, or getting out of a car may reproduce the pain. Pain in the groin can also come from the hip joint, abdominal wall, or other nearby tissues, so location alone cannot confirm a strain.

Practical next steps

Reduce movements that sharply increase pain while keeping gentle, comfortable walking if you can do so without limping. A wrapped cold pack may soothe the area after activity. Do not force a deep stretch or return to cutting and kicking movements while ordinary movements remain painful. A physiotherapist can assess strength, hip movement, and load tolerance, then build a graded plan through Exercise Therapy and, for athletes, Sports Physiotherapy.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, you cannot walk normally, bruising or swelling is pronounced, or symptoms are not settling with relative rest. Seek prompt medical care after a significant injury, especially if you felt a sudden pop, have marked weakness, numbness, fever, or pain in the testicle or abdomen. These features may need evaluation beyond a simple muscle strain.

Questions for your doctor

Which tissue is most likely causing my pain? Which movements should I pause, and which are safe? How will we judge readiness for a Return-to-Sport Programme? Could my hip or abdominal wall be contributing?

Questions people ask

Can groin strain pain spread into the thigh?

Yes. Adductor-related pain can extend along the inner thigh, although the exact pattern varies.

Does every groin pain location indicate a strain?

No. Hip, abdominal, nerve, and other conditions can cause groin pain, so persistent or severe symptoms deserve assessment.
