Groin skin tag: what to know

Skin tags are usually soft and may hang from a narrow base or sit as a small raised bump. Friction from underwear, movement, or skin folds can make one sore, swollen, or prone to bleeding after catching. A growth that is hard, ulcerated, rapidly changing, heavily pigmented, or repeatedly bleeding may not be a skin tag and needs examination. Warts and other lesions can look similar in the groin.

Do not diagnose from a photograph alone. The clinician will consider the surface, attachment, colour, symptoms, and nearby lesions before discussing options.

Avoid cutting, tying off, burning, or using household wart products on the groin. Reduce rubbing with comfortable clothing and keep the area clean and dry. If removal is wanted because of catching or appearance, a dermatology clinician can discuss skin tag removal, cryotherapy, or electrosurgery. The choice depends on the lesion and the surrounding skin; healing may include temporary tenderness or a small crust.

Book an assessment for a new or uncertain growth, especially if it changes, becomes painful, bleeds without catching, develops an irregular surface, or fails to heal after irritation. Seek prompt care for persistent bleeding, marked swelling, pus, spreading redness, or severe pain. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines that affect healing or bleeding.
